There are a lot of things to look for and a lot of which can’t be checked without hearing it run. It was good enough for a hay truck which is what it was but wouldn’t of made someone like you looking to use it or swap it very happy. Once I got the IDM replaced it ran but on 7 of 8 cylinders which was a quick diag to find no oil coming from the number 8 injector and once replaced ran “pretty good” but had a bunch of blow by and not so wonderful compression. Different cars and trucks may not be compatible, so this part is not to be installed in those cars or trucks. Ford F350s from model years 1994, 1995, 19 are compatible with this replacement part.
the IDM( injector driver module on those is mounted to the driver side under the hood where rain water eventually finds its way into the module and destroys it ) was full of water which had completely killed the driver side bank. The Diesel Injector Driver Module is an element that allows the driver to set a speed and have the car to keep to that speed automatically. just recently fixed a 96 at my house that had been sitting for years and years because they couldn’t figure it out. and before I get ahead of myself buzz test needs to primarily pass for it to start they’re famous for IDM issues and under valve cover wiring harness issues. crank it over and look at icp and see if you have atleast 500psi. I wouldn’t consider it without having some sort of diagnostic equipment autel/snap on etc.
I wouldn’t say the CPS is a common no start honestly and would skip that. Also had no oil out of the driver side injectors. Replacing your OEM IDM can solve these issues and even provide a boost in performance over stock units. Common symptoms of a bad 7.3 IDM include engine misfiring, excessive smoke, hard starts, rough idling, and bad fuel economy. Wouldn't pull it's own weight much less a trailer. Bad Injector Drive Modules are often the culprit behind poor running trucks. Had a 7.3 in the shop the other day that was running on passenger side cylinders only.
